Public comment period ends Friday for the National Park Service’s possible entrance fee hike at some of the nation’s most popular landmarks. Earlier this year, the Trump administration proposed raising the entrance fee to $70 during peak season at many of the protected lands. The plan is intended to fund improvements for the parks’ old infrastructure, but some experts say the increase could drive away visitors.
If you are heading to the airport, leave early. Friday is projected to be one of the busiest holiday air travel days, according to the Airlines for America trade group. (Dec. 21 and Dec. 26 are the other peak days). Airlines are expecting to see a record 51 million passengers for the holiday season, a 3.5% increase from the previous peak of 49.3 million last year. If you can, consider switching your flight to Dec. 24, Dec. 25 or Dec. 31, which are projected to be the lightest days of the holiday period, which runs through Jan. 4.

Christmas week isn’t just for travel. The holiday is also a big one for new movie releases. This year’s new releases include the a cappella sequel Pitch Perfect 3, Matt Damon-led shrinking flick Downsizing and potential Oscar contenderDarkest Hour, all of which hit theaters Friday. Those not your speed? There are plenty of other movies to see this Christmas weekend including the Jumanji remake starring Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart and a singing and dancing Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman. Several potential Oscar contenders join the fray Christmas Day in The Post, Phantom Thread and All the Money in the World.
The weather’s getting chilly, and that means it’s the perfect time to see what’s playing on the silver screen. While these flicks aren’t holiday-themed, they’re certainly worth watching this season.
